Pop icon Demi Lovato says she was 14 when she stopped speaking to her father. “He was abusive. He was mean. But he wanted to be a good person and he wanted to have his family,” she says.

The Grammy-nominated singer and actress who struggled with addiction, an eating disorder, self-harm and suicidal ideation since she was a child claims her father also had addiction and mental health issues.

“I think he knew I was upset with him and then, the worst part about it was, I didn’t get that closure until he passed away.”

What does Demi say she did that helped her to work through her feelings about her father? Tune in to Tuesday's Dr. Phil.
