Jody and Mike claim their once-honor roll daughter, Michelle, has flipped a switch in the last nine months and has become a school-skipping, pot smoking, alcohol drinking, habitual runaway prone to explosive outbursts. The parents also say she dates older men and is currently in a relationship with an 18-year-old. At their wits’ end, they say they don’t know how to rein in her behavior.

On Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Dr. Phil introduces Dr. Jennifer Smirnoff, a licensed professional clinical counselor and cognitive behavioral therapist, who offers her suggestions for the family.
“I would definitely want to work with Jody and Mike together on parenting skills, and maybe, I’m hearing some need for anger management skills,” Dr. Smirnoff says. “I’d also want to work one-on-one with Michelle and help her work on things that a typical 14-year-old needs to work on — better understanding herself, figuring out who she is, her values, her ethics, her morals, what she wants in life, what is she interested in.”

Dr. Phil adds, “When you start learning those skills, and getting problem-solving skills and working the problem instead of screaming the problem, really kind of a hush falls over the crowd.”
