How You May Sabotage Yourself Before You Start to Pursue Your Weight Loss Goals

          December 8, 2015

“Everybody has a personal truth. It’s what you say about yourself when nobody else is looking, nobody else is listening,” Dr. Phil tells Nadine, who says she’s has struggled with a lifelong obsession to be thin. To hide that personal truth, Dr. Phil says many people wear a social mask, which makes them appear outwardly happy. “It’s what you say to you, about you, when you don’t have this social mask on.”

Dr. Phil continues, “You said every bite of food you take, you feel depression, guilt, anxiety — you just feel like everything you put in your mouth is a bad thing to do. You said it destroys your health; it destroys your life. And, you said you feel like a failure.”

“Absolutely,” she says. “It’s gotten to the point where I can’t eat a single thing without freaking out, feeling bad, feeling guilty, feeling anxiety, because depending on what diet I’ve been on in the past, every single food is wrong.”

Dr. Phil reviews Nadine’s personal truth according to what’s she’s confided. “You say, ‘I’m a failure, I’m a loser. I’m ugly and I’m fat,’” he recalls and points out that some of Natalie’s childhood experiences may have damaged her personal truth. “The importance of the personal truth is that we generate the results in life that we truly believe we deserve.”

“I don’t deserve it or something,” she says. “Some part of me, obviously, doesn’t believe in myself or believe that I can be that person.”

Dr. Phil gives Nadine tips to adopt healthier habits from his book, The 20/20 Diet: Turn Your Weight Loss Vision into Reality. Watch more here.
