Forensic Pathologist Calls Rodney Reed Death Penalty Case A ‘Travesty Of Justice’
Texas teenager Stacey Stites was murdered in 1996. DNA found on Stacey’s body matched that of Rodney Reed, an African American man who claims he’d been having a secret sexual relationship with Stacey, who was Caucasian.

Reed vehemently denies either raping or murdering Stacey and claims the last time he was with her was two nights prior to her death. All of Rodney Reed’s appeals have been exhausted. His execution is scheduled for November 20, 2019.

Retired NYPD Detective Sergeant Kevin Gannon, who has been investigating the case since 2014, disputes the official cause of Stacey Stites’s death. He says he believes she was drowned, not strangled, and that the murder scene was staged.
Dr. Cyril Wecht is a forensic pathologist who has investigated many high-profile cases, including the deaths of President John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, and Jon Benet Ramsey.
In part one of a two-part episode airing Thursday, Dr. Wecht joins Dr. Phil via satellite to discuss what he says he discovered after looking at Stacey Stites’s autopsy report.
“I would say without hesitation that this is one of the clearest, unequivocal cases of gross misjudgment – of a travesty of justice – that I’ve ever seen,” he says.
