Dr. Paul Saunders, a cardiothoracic surgeon, says he recently battled COVID-19 but has now stepped back onto the front lines to help fight the novel coronavirus. Dr. Saunders is also the Director of the ECMO program at Maimonides Medical Center, a procedure that can save the lives of critical ill patients.

“It takes the blood out of a patient and runs it through an oxygenator to add in oxygen, take out carbon dioxide. It’s used for people who are suffering from profound respiratory failure, or lung failure, or cardiac failure,” Dr. Saunders explains to Dr. Phil on Wednesday’s episode.
