Connor says he began vaping a year ago and took up the habit, in part, because of peer pressure. The 12-year-old says he keeps vaping because it makes him feel “calm.”

Dr. Charles Sophy, a renowned psychiatrist and author, tells Connor he has been self-medicating. “It’s a good way to feel, but there are other ways to do it,” he says.

Connor admits that he has lied to his parents and stolen from his mom to get ahold of vaping products in the past. He says that while he is trying to do better, “If I were them, I wouldn’t trust me at the moment.”

Does Connor say he understands the harm that vaping is doing to his body?

This episode of Dr. Phil, “Flavor Chasing: The Teen Vaping Crisis,” airs Thursday. And later, Dr. Phil talks to a 23-year-old who has vowed never to vape again after being hospitalized twice with a collapsed lung.
