“I’m sorry for their loss, and I hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me,” says 19-year-old Austin Harrouff in an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil airing Thursday.
The attack on Michelle Mishcon Stevens, 53, and John Stevens III, 59, occurred at the couple’s home near Jupiter on August 15, 2016. Authorities say when they arrived at the scene, they discovered Harrouff sitting on top of John Stevens’ body. They claim he was tearing flesh away from the deceased victim’s face and abdomen – with his teeth.
“I didn’t ever consciously want to do something like this,” asserts Harrouff who claims he was experiencing paranoia, and hearing voices at the time of the killings.
Harrouff is also accused of stabbing the Stevens' neighbor, Jeff Fisher, multiple times as he attempted to come to their defense. Fisher survived.
“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through, or ... I never imagined that this would ever happen,” says Harrouff.
The family of Michelle Mishcon Stevens has released the following statement:
“Michelle Mishcon’s family will NEVER accept an apology from Austin Harrouff that does not come from a place of complete honesty. Austin Harrouff’s apology is not authentic. He takes go genuine accountability for destroying two families, and he offers nothing more than weak excuses and convenient selective memory.”
“We are disheartened by the fact that Austin Harrouff chose to give a statement to Dr. Phil, instead of to the police. We think this speaks volumes about the type of person Austin Harrouff is. A person with true regret would take responsibility for one’s actions, but Austin Harrouff has chosen not to do that.”
“Michelle’s family is suffering every second of every day. Words cannot express how much we loved Michelle. She was simply the best sister/daughter/aunt/mother ever! We are confident that justice will prevail for Michelle and John.”
