Mom Claims Son Is Locked Up For Minor Incidents, Victim Of School-To-Prison Pipeline
“My 15-year-old son is currently in the school-to-prison pipeline,” says Ashley. “It absolutely terrifies me.”
Ashley says that her son was caught shoplifting when he was 14, the school sent additional charges to the judge for incidents that occurred on campus, and he was arrested. “None of what my son has done -- whether it be shoplifting, trespassing, or a fight at school -- is enough for him to be incarcerated at the age of 14. My son has been labeled and targeted a juvenile delinquent when he’s not.”
When a child is choosing the wrong path, what is the legal system’s responsibility? Can parents rely on the juvenile justice system to provide resources to get their child back on track, or should the system solely provide punishment and lock them up? On Monday’s episode of Dr. Phil, “How Should We Treat Juvenile Delinquents?” hear what parents, a former police officer, and a judge have to say. Check local listings to see where you can watch.
