Mom Claims Teen Daughter Is ‘A Disrespectful Brat’

          October 10, 2017

Cydney says her 16-year-old daughter, Dakota, is “defiant, out of control and a disrespectful brat.” Claiming Dakota does “whatever she wants,” Cydney says it’s impossible to parent her and admits she sometimes uses physical force on her daughter.

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Have a family drama that needs Dr. Phil’s help?

“Things get out of control, and I’ve had to restrain her, put her in a headlock, sit on her. I’ve pulled her hair just to get her under control,” says Cydney, claiming Dakota has hit, slapped, and punched her in the face.

Dakota claims when she was small, both Cydney and her father, John, were addicted to drugs and often left her in the care of her grandmother. She says she acts out now because her parents never taught her right from wrong.

Dakota claims growing up, her mother, Cydney, and father, John, were drug addicts who didn’t teach her right from wrong. The 16-year-old, who currently faces two misdemeanor charges that could send her to juvenile detention, admits to smoking marijuana every day, skipping school, and doing what she wants – when she wants. She openly refers to herself as a “rebel” who doesn’t listen, and “could care less about what any authority has to say.”

Cydney says she’s given up trying to discipline her daughter, who she claims to be afraid of. “I have to restrain her, so she doesn’t beat me up,” she says.

“Yeah, my mom and I have gotten into fistfights,” says Dakota. “Yes – honestly – maybe like 75 percent of the time I throw first,” she admits.

It was Dakota, not Cydney, who reached out to Dr. Phil for help. She says she and her mother are both trying to work things out.

When the idea of returning to family therapy is brought up, Dakota rejects the idea, then mocks both her mother and Dr. Phil before replying: “Like, I’m trying to get help right now, and obviously, it’s not helping.”

What does Dr. Phil recommend to help Dakota and her mother heal their relationship?
