Jaime and Ruben’s 11-year-old daughter, Khloie, survived the shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022, by playing dead. Khloie’s best friend, Amerie, was among the 19 students and two teachers who were killed that day. Jaime and Ruben say that Khloie has been struggling with survivor’s guilt ever since.

“She says that it’s her fault – that she shouldn’t have let her [Amerie’s] hand go, and she calls herself names,” says Jaime about Khloie.

Watch the video above to hear what else Ruben and Jaime say Khloie told them she did that day to save herself from the gunman.

Part one of this two-part Dr. Phil Exclusive, “Two Families, One Tragedy,” airs Thursday. And on Friday’s conclusion, “Through a Child’s Eyes: Surviving a Mass Tragedy,” Christine, a former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, talks to Khloie about what helped her to get through the darkest days she faced after the shooting that took the lives of her friends and teachers.
