Carol says it’s difficult seeing what her 22-year-old daughter, Emily, has done to herself. Emily, an abuse survivor who self-harms, estimates she’s cut herself nearly half a million times over the last nine years.

“She’s hacked herself up – it’s carnage,” says Carol. “I can’t count the number of times we’ve gone to the emergency room to get her sewn, glued or stapled.”
