Terry Crews On Going Public With Sexual Assault Allegations: ‘Once I Decided To Get Rid Of The Shame, I Was Free’

          March 13, 2018

Actor Terry Crews has been a staple in film and television for nearly two decades. In a series of tweets from October 2017, the 49-year-old former NFL linebacker claimed he was sexually assaulted by an entertainment industry executive while attending a party with his wife, Rebecca, in early 2016.

Crews claims he reported Adam Venit to his employer, William Morris Endeavor, immediately following the alleged incident, but alleges that they didn’t respond until after he went public.

“When I did those tweets – I didn’t name anyone. But I got calls immediately,” says Crews. “Like literally in an hour about – from the agency, like ‘Are you okay? Are you okay?’ I’m like, ‘No, I’m not okay.’ And they said, ‘Well, we didn’t know Terry.’ I said, ‘Then why are you calling me? I didn’t mention anybody in the tweets.’”

“Let me tell you something,” he says. “When you start catching people in lies, when you start seeing the gaslighting happen; this is what women have been going through for years.”

Terry Crews was named a Time Magazine 2017 “Person of the Year” as one of the “silence breakers” of the #MeToo movement after speaking out publicly about sexual assault and harassment.

“Once I decided to get rid of the shame, I was free. And by coming out, and saying what happened to me, it freed me,” he tells Dr. Phil on Wednesday’s episode.

Adam Venit adamantly denies Crews’ accusation of sexual assault. He was later demoted from head of the motion picture department at William Morris Endeavor.

The Los Angeles City Attorney and Los Angeles DA has have rejected Terry Crews’ criminal sexual assault complaint against Adam. The DA determined that the alleged conduct did not rise to the level of a felony, and the city attorney determined a misdemeanor complaint was barred by the statute of limitations. Crews says he now has a civil lawsuit pending against Venit.
