Former Michigan State University physician and USA Gymnastics national team doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to serve from 40-175 years behind bars in early 2018 after having pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography, possession of pornographic images of children and 10 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with young women and underage girls.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina presided over Nassar’s trial, then allowed nearly 100 of his accusers to make victim impact statements during his sentencing hearing.

“I think it’s the biggest gift you can give a victim is to believe them and give them a voice in a safe space,” says the judge.

Judge Aquilina was accused of bias by Nassar and his legal team. Watch the video above to learn why she says both sides were angry with her.
