Monica says she’s been diagnosed with Sleep-Related Eating Disorder (S.R.E.D.), a condition that triggers her to binge eat in her sleep, and C. diff (Clostridioides difficile), an infection that causes inflammation of the colon and severe diarrhea. The 38-year-old says she spends most of her time bedridden or in the bathroom, has lost most of her friends, and feels isolated due to her illness.

Dr. Phil says that people who are chronically ill or in pain sometimes take on their disease as their identity, causing their world to become “very small.”

“When you stop doing other things and become tunnel-visioned on your illness to the point that it defines you, then it starts to own you,” he says in The Bubble Over My Head. “If you’ve got a chronic disease in your family, or you’ve got a chronic disease, you’ve got to require the most out of yourself that you can possibly do.”
