Dr. Phil says when there are problems in a family, there is often a target individual who causes chaos, but it’s important to look at what’s going on in the family as a whole.

On Tuesday’s episode, he speaks with Joy, who says her son, Andrew, has been expelled from school, been in trouble with the police, and terrorizes his siblings with pranks in an effort to be a TikTok star. Joy claims Andrew’s troubles started when his father left the house, and she got a restraining order against him. She admits that she has trouble following through with discipline for the 16-year-old.

Dr. Phil says that in his book Family First: Your Step-by-Step Plan for Creating a Phenomenal Family, he explains what needs to happen when a family has been broken. “That’s not the time to be more indulgent; that’s the time when the kids need to see that there’s somebody there to still run the business of the family,” he says in the Today’s Takeaway video above. “When things get disrupted in a family, kids look for sameness. They look for something they can rely on.”
