Dr. Phil says that once you’re a parent, you’re always a parent so you must learn how to cope with the difficulties if you face them.

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Conflict so big it needs a Dr. Phil solution?

“I’ve been a parent for almost 40 years and I’ve never found that window where you go to say, ‘I quit.’ There’s just no option to quit,” he says in the video above from after the show. “They’re your kids, and they’re always going to come home to roost.”

He adds that if you find yourself dealing with a parenting situation in which you are overwhelmed, you must reach out for help.

“Don’t try to find a way to get out of your role as a parent. You’re the most powerful role model your kids are ever going to have,” he continues. “What you’re teaching them now is what they’re going to display once they get out into the world. And the longer you wait, the harder it is to rein them in and get them under control.”
