“We always want to handle things with our families amongst ourselves, but there is a point where pathology gets beyond you just being able to talk to them about it, whether it’s alcohol, or drugs, or depression, or anxiety,” Dr. Phil says.

It’s at that point, where you must reach for outside help, and Dr. Phil says there’s one main criteria to look for in a therapist.

“If you are looking for a therapist, there’s one question you want to ask every one: ‘Do you adhere to evidence-based therapies?’ Because those are therapies that are empirically demonstrated to be useful,” Dr. Phil explains. "Everything we do on this show is grounded in an evidence-based therapy.”
