Carissa says her dreams of becoming an international model were dashed after she posted what others labeled as transphobic comments on social media. Her initial post read, “Being transgender does not make you a woman; it makes you simply transgender.”

Carissa claims the post was her attempt to “open up a conversation” in the aftermath of the public attack, and subsequent murder, of transgender woman Muhlaysia Booker in 2019.

Following social media blowback, Carissa’s modeling agency terminated her contract, and another agency rejected her. Carissa says she panicked and tweeted that she was transgender; a lie, which she now says she regrets.

On Friday’s Dr. Phil, Carissa meets Ashlee Marie Preston, media personality, activist, and the first openly trans person to run for state office in California. In the video above Ashlee tells Carissa, “I don’t know that you’re quite sad about your actions as much as your sad about the inconvenience of accountability.”
