Critics say that Americans pulling the “victim card” seems to be at an all-time high. Shannon Moroney is an author and trauma counselor who says she believes that negative experiences can serve to strengthen a person and build resilience instead of allowing oneself to fall into a victim mentality.

“We don’t have a choice about what other people say or do to us (or) about us. We only have a choice about how we’re going to respond,” Shannon says.

On Tuesday’s episode of Dr. Phil, “The Rise of Victimhood Culture,” Shannon tells Dr. Phil about her experience at age 30 when she learned her husband of one month had abducted and assaulted two women while she was out of town.
