Recently, actor Jussie Smollett claimed he was the victim of a hate crime. He claims that he was attacked by two men who put a noose around his neck, poured bleach on him and yelled racial and homophobic slurs.

After investigating and speaking with the two men, police say they believe that the Empire actor planned the attack. Smollett maintains he is the victim.

On Wednesday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Dr. Phil speaks with journalists and media personalities, including Harvey Levin from TMZ Live, who share their various theories about the allegations and investigation which has raised questions such as: How often do hate crimes occur? And, why would a person lie about a hate crime?

In the video above from after the show, Dr. Phil speaks with the audience about Smollett’s behavior during an interview with Good Morning America in the days following the attack and shares why he believes some of Smollett’s behaviors indicate he is lying.
