“There’s something in psychology called perceptual defense,” Dr. Phil says. “And perceptual defense is the mind’s ability to block certain things from consciousness because they’re overwhelming.”

For example, he says that if you were to see your child die a tragic death, your mind may block that so you have no conscious recollection of what you saw.

On Tuesday’s episode, Dr. Phil speaks with Ryan who was with his brother, James Kulstad, the night he died.
