‘We Are Not Numbers On A Page; We Are Human Beings,’ Says Teacher Who Feels It’s Unsafe To Open Schools
“I do not feel that it is safe to reopen campuses at this time,” says Karen, who has been a public school teacher for 25 years. “Putting 36, 40 students in a room with a teacher, that’s not properly ventilated, is just a recipe for disaster.”
Citing statistics, she says many teachers could die of COVID-19 if they return to the classroom, and she doesn’t want it to be her or her students.
“Teachers walk into their jobs, into their classrooms every single day preparing for an active shooter. And, reopening campuses at this time is asking me to bring home that active shooter, and I’m not willing to do that,” she says.
