Terese claims her 32-year-old daughter, Kristen, is an alcoholic who drinks in cycles. “She’ll decide to get drunk, and then she’ll stay drunk for five or six weeks at a time.”

TELL DR. PHIL YOUR STORY: Life in crisis?

Claiming her mom is controlling, Kristen says, “I drink when I am pushed into a corner and I feel like my only sense of control is to be defiant.” She says when she drinks, she feels “empowered.”

Kristen, who moved back in with Terese after she received her fifth DUI two years ago, says she feels guilty after drinking because she knows she’s let down the people in her life. “I wish I knew the rhyme or reason why I drink … I don’t know what’s behind it.”

Can Dr. Phil help this family gain a better understanding of what may be driving Kristen to drink?
