Abby says that when she was 5 years old, she had communication with a spirit named “Shelly” and that that opened the door for other spirits to come inside her. She claims she became possessed by demons for more than a decade and that she only was able to remove them from her body after three exorcisms. Now, she says she suffers debilitating PTSD that mimics what she calls her demonic episodes.

Dr. Phil explains to Abby that her symptoms are also similar to other diseases, so it’s possible that she was not actually possessed. In the video above from Thursday’s episode, Dr. Phil points out to Abby why it’s so important that she change her thinking about what has happened to her.

“The problem with calling it what it isn’t is you then do not treat what it is,” he says. “So, if you call something a demon, when in fact it is a hallucination, then you would deal with the possession rather than the hallucination. If you call something possession instead of paralysis from anxiety, then you’re going to treat this and not give the tools to deal with this.”
