Joelle says her 28-year-old daughter, Kaitlin, who was once a high school cheerleader, is now hooked on heroin
– and six months pregnant with her third child. Joelle admits that she has enabled Kaitlin’s addiction by giving her approximately $10,000 over the last several years, paying for hotels because Kaitlin is homeless and even, on occasion, accompanying her and paying for her drugs. So why does she say she enables her daughter’s addiction? In the video above from Wednesday’s episode of Dr. Phil
, she reveals that her guilt as a mother is driving her behavior.
“I feel guilty that I wasn’t there for her as a mother,” Joelle says, explaining that Kaitlin was molested by a family friend when she was 10. “Then, her dad died and it was a back-to-back thing, and I was very much mourning over his death, as well as trying to take care of the three children, and I wasn’t good at that point. I was a good mom until all of that happened.”WATCH: ‘My Mom Is A Big Reason Why My Sister Is A Pregnant Addict’
Dr. Phil tries to make sense of Joelle’s logic. “So you think now, since she was victimized at 10, you will help her poison herself to death so you’ll feel better?” he asks Joelle.
“I didn’t know she was doing heroin at that time,” Joelle claims.
Dr. Phil interrupts her. “You can’t tell me that, so don’t waste my time with that,” he says to her. “We’re talking about her life and that baby’s life. You’ve already got two who have paid the price, a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old who have paid the price. How much is going to have to be lost before you pull your head out [expletive]?”
