Why Sometimes You Need To Tell Yourself What You Wish Others Would Tell You

          September 28, 2016

Joselyn claims her mother Aaliyah abused her throughout her childhood. She says some of her mother’s behavior included hitting her in the forehead, pouring hot sauce down her throat and cutting off her hair and forcing her to look in the mirror and tell herself she was ugly.

Aaliyah admits she relied on corporal punishment with Joselyn and her younger brother, and explains that that’s how she was raised. She says she’s now a changed person and realizes that her punishments often didn’t fit the crime and that she has apologized to Joselyn numerous times, but Joselyn continues to harbor resentment.

Dr. Phil tells Aaliyah, “She will never put that behind her unless and until she believes that you fully get and understand not what you did, but what it did it her.”

To Joselyn, he says, “What you have to understand is you don’t need her to do that. You don’t have to have that in order to be OK … she may not have the capacity to give you that.” He continues, “You have to decide that you’re either going to continue this generational legacy of toxicity in a family or you’re going to decide that you chart a new course for you and your daughter.”
