At 6 years old, Nick was put into foster care when his biological mother, Lupita, was sent to prison. Lupita’s parental rights were terminated over a decade ago, and Nick remained a ward of the state until Amy and Jeremy made him a permanent member of their family when he was 12. Since his adoption, Nick’s parents say they’ve had him in multiple psychiatric and trauma care facilities in hopes of treating his escalating aggression and behavioral issues. He also recently reconnected with Lupita when Amy reached out to her son’s birth mother
– in desperation, she says – for help.
On Friday’s Dr. Phil,
the (now) 17-year-old talks about his perceptions of the two very different women who each claim him as their son. He also explains why he chooses behaviors that get him into trouble. Nick says, “It’s kind of like when people ask me – do I want to end up in jail – it’s kind of … already in my head I think, I’m kind of destined to go there.”
