Samantha claims as a child, her mother, Carrie, was violent toward her, she believes, because of her addiction to pain medication. She claims her mother would push her, pull her hair, smack her and kick her.

“I remember the look in her eyes: evil, scary. She looked like she hated me,” the young woman says.

Samantha says she has never been able to forgive her mother because Carrie, who admits that she is still abusing prescription medications, has never apologized for her behavior.

“My mom has never taken responsibility for the stuff she’s put me through. I know part of my depression is due to the things that happened to me when I was younger,” Samantha says. “If my mom would acknowledge the abuse, it would be the biggest breakthrough for me.”
