Elizabeth says when she stayed with her sister and brother-in-law, Louise and David Turpin, during the summer of 1996, she noticed some unusual behavior. She claims that her sister made all the decisions in the house and that David followed along. She also claims that Louise made her oldest daughter ask for permission before she could eat a meal.

On January 14, 2018,Louise and David were arrested and accused of starving, torturing and chaining their 13 kids to their beds. Police say when they arrived at the house some are calling the “California House of Horrors,” they learned that the children, ages 2-29, were allegedly not allowed to use the bathroom, could only shower one time a year and were not allowed to wash their hands above the wrists. The couple is facing 37 felony counts of torture, false imprisonment and child abuse and if convicted could each face 94 years in prison. They have entered not guilty pleas.
