Shelby recently went on a spring break trip to Miami despite nationwide restrictions put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The 21-year-old told a news outlet in Miami that she was “trying to get drunk before everything closes,” and the video went viral with almost 40 million views. Now, she says she has received backlash from around the world.

“It’s hurtful to think that millions of people have this false perception of me. It’s hurtful to think that there’s so-called friends out there sharing this video. It’s hurtful to think that my mom and dad have to be worried about me because, for the first time in my life, I’ve spoke up about depression and suicidal thoughts,” she tells Dr. Phil on Thursday’s episode.
Dr. Phil offers the young woman advice. “When you start talking about being depressed or having suicidal thoughts, you are giving your power away to people you don’t even know,” he says. “Don’t let that control you. You’ve got to take your power back.”
