Denise’s parents, sister, son, and niece claim she is a mooch, drinks too much alcohol, and is a hoarder. They claim they’ve tried to help the 68-year-old, who lives with her parents who are in their 80s, but she won’t change.
 
Dr. Phil says he doesn’t believe the family has enforced any consequences with Denise and tells them what he thinks they must do if they truly want to help her. “You need to impose iron-clad standards with her,” he says. 
 

To Denise's parents, he says, “You are allowing her to self-destruct in order to make yourselves feel better." To Denise's sister, son, and niece, he says, “All of you have allowed her to continue to unravel and self-destruct because you don’t want the anxiety of her being on the street and the guilt that you would experience if something bad happened and she dies on the street.”
